Melting Snowman Experiment

If you need an easy winter STEM activity that feels like play (but still teaches real science), the melting snowman experiment is a total winner. Kids get to build their own little snowmen, decorate them, and then “melt” them on purpose using droppers and fizzy science. It’s part sensory play, part chemistry, and honestly just a really satisfying way to spend a cold afternoon.

Why You’ll Love This Melting Snowman Experiment

  • Quick to set up with basic supplies
  • Big visual payoff (the melting is dramatic and fun)
  • Builds fine motor skills with droppers and squeezing
  • Easy way to introduce chemical reactions and observation
  • Totally customizable: add glitter, colors, or make a whole snowman family

Materials

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Glitter (optional, but kids love it)
  • Foam sheets or felt (orange and black)
  • Eye droppers
  • Tray (a baking sheet works perfectly)

Optional: small bowls or cups for vinegar, extra droppers, paper towels for quick cleanup.

Step-by-Step: How to Do the Melting Snowman Experiment

1) Set up your tray

Place your tray on a table or floor space that’s easy to wipe down. This experiment is pretty manageable, but it does fizz and spread, so the tray keeps everything contained. If you’re doing this with multiple kids, give each child their own “snowman zone” on the tray.

2) Make your baking soda snow dough

In a bowl, mix baking soda with just enough water to create a moldable texture—think wet sand that packs together. Start with about 1 cup of baking soda and add water slowly, a spoonful at a time, until it holds its shape when you squeeze it. If it gets too wet, add more baking soda.

This is the “snow” that will hold your snowman together.

3) Build your snowmen

Have kids shape the baking soda mixture into snowmen right on the tray. The easiest way is to make two or three balls(big bottom, smaller middle, smallest head) and gently press them together. If the snowballs crumble a bit, that’s fine—kids can pack them tighter with their hands.

Tip: For toddlers, you can pre-make the balls and let them stack and decorate.

4) Decorate your snowmen

Cut small shapes from foam sheets or felt:

  • Orange triangle for a carrot nose
  • Tiny black circles for eyes
  • A few small black pieces for buttons or a mouth

Press the pieces lightly into the snowman. Sprinkle a little glitter over the top if you want a sparkly “snowfall” effect.

5) Prep your melting solution

Pour vinegar into a small cup or bowl. If you want to make it extra fun, add a pinch of glitter to the vinegar too (or keep glitter just on the snowmen). You can also split vinegar into multiple cups and tint them with food coloring, but it’s not required.

6) Start melting with droppers

This is the best part. Give kids eye droppers and show them how to suck up vinegar and drip it onto their snowman. The moment vinegar hits the baking soda, it will fizz and bubble and start to “melt” the snowman down.

Encourage kids to drip in different spots:

  • What happens when they drip on the head?
  • Does the snowman melt faster if they drip more vinegar?
  • What if they drip slowly versus quickly?

7) Keep experimenting

Once the fizz slows, add more vinegar. You can also sprinkle a little extra baking soda on the tray and let kids drip vinegar onto that too. Some kids love rebuilding their snowman and melting it again—totally allowed.

What’s the Science?

Baking soda is a base, vinegar is an acid. When they mix, they create a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide gas. That gas is what makes the fizzing bubbles that “melt” your snowman apart. It’s a super simple way for kids to see chemistry in action.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
