Looking for a creative way to sneak in some name practice without breaking out a pencil and worksheet? Let me introduce you to one of our favorite low-prep, high-fun learning activities: the LEGO Name Activity! If your kids are anything like mine, they’ll jump at the chance to play with LEGO bricks—and this activity makes it extra special by turning their name into the star of the show.

We love LEGO for so many reasons: it’s open-ended, screen-free, and naturally builds fine motor skills, problem-solving, and creativity. This simple name-building challenge adds a sneaky literacy bonus, too. Whether your child is just starting to recognize their name or already reading confidently, building letters with bricks helps reinforce letter shapes in a fun, tactile way. Bonus points if they turn their name into a fancy 3D sculpture afterward!

Why You’ll Love This LEGO Name Activity

  • It’s fun, hands-on learning that feels like play.
  • Great for preschoolers learning to spell their name or elementary kids practicing letters.
  • Easy to set up and uses supplies you probably already have.
  • Builds fine motor strength and spatial reasoning.
  • You can repeat it with sight words, last names, or themed words too!

Materials

  • LEGO bricks (any size or color)
  • LEGO baseplate (optional, but helpful)
  • Pencil and paper

How to Set Up the LEGO Name Activity

  1. Write Out the Name
Start by writing your child’s name on a sheet of paper in all capital letters. Depending on their age they can do this step on their own. This makes it easier to build since capital letters are mostly made from straight lines.
  1. Simplify the Letters
Look at each letter and break it down into only horizontal and vertical lines. For example, the letter “A” would look more like a square “U” with a bar across. You’re going for a “blocky” version of each letter that can be recreated using LEGO bricks.
  1. Plan on Paper
Before building, help your child visualize each letter using simple boxes and lines. This step helps them problem-solve and plan ahead.
  2. Start Building on the Baseplate
Use LEGO bricks to build each letter of the name directly onto the baseplate. You can use bricks of any size or color—rainbow names are especially fun! Try to keep the letters the same height, and leave a one-brick gap between each letter.
  1. Add Details (Optional)
Once the name is complete, your child can decorate the letters with fun add-ons like LEGO flowers, mini figures, or custom flags. Or take it a step further by turning their name into a mini building or tower!

This activity is one we come back to again and again. It’s perfect for quiet afternoons, LEGO-themed learning days, or even just adding a little creative play into your homeschool or after-school routine. And trust me—there’s something extra special about seeing your name built out of LEGO bricks. Kids feel so proud!

Looking for a challenge? Try spelling out sight words, family names, or summer vocabulary. You could even set up a name-building LEGO station for a birthday party or playdate.

Happy building!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
