Materials Needed

  • Large sheet of paper
  • Markers (brown and black)
  • Washable kids paint (in fall colours)
  • Cardboard tube
  • Paper plate
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Letter Setup:

Using your brown marker, draw a large tree with lots of branches large on the sheet of paper. Take your black marker and write letters all over the tree branches. Ensure that among these letters, there’s both an uppercase ‘L’ and a lowercase ‘l’.

2. Craft Your Leaf Stamp:

Take the cardboard tube and cut it slightly to give it a crease. Now, fold the tube to resemble the shape of a leaf.

3. Prepping the Paint:

Pour your chosen washable kids paint onto the paper plate. Use colours that resemble the fall leaves around you. Spread it out enough so the cardboard tube leaf can easily be dipped into it. I used multiple colours for this activity. If you are doing it with a preschooler choose just one colour and have them stamp the letter l leaves with just one colour. For older kids 5 to 6 years old you can ask them what colours then want to use. The more colours you use the messy it will be and the less they will focus on the letters. Keep it simple and use one or two colours only.

4. Let the Stamping Begin:

Invite your child to dip the cardboard tube leaf stamp into the paint. Ensure it’s coated well but not dripping. Then, guide them to stamp onto all the Letter Ls (both ‘L’ and ‘l’) on the paper.

Skills Fostered:

1. Fine Motor Skills: Gripping the cardboard tube and stamping aids in refining those tiny hand muscles.

2. Letter Recognition: Identifying and stamping the letter L reinforces its shape, sound, and significance.

3. Creativity and Imagination: Engaging with colors and the stamping process itself stirs the child’s artistic spirit.

Tips to Minimize Mess

  1. Work Surface: Choose a wipeable surface or place a disposable tablecloth underneath the work area for easier cleanup.
  2. Dress for the Occasion: Wear old clothes or an apron to avoid any paint mishaps.
  3. Portion Control: Pour out small amounts of paint at a time to avoid excessive waste or spills.
  4. Immediate Cleanup: As soon as the activity is complete, prompt cleanup ensures that the paint doesn’t dry in unwanted areas.

As autumn leaves dance in the wind, let your child’s creativity take flight with the Letter L Leaf Stamping activity. Not only will they adore the process, but they’ll also gain a firmer grasp on the wonderful world of letters. Here’s to playful learning and laughter-filled afternoons!

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
