What is Kente Cloth?
Kente cloth comes from Ghana, West Africa, and is known for its vibrant patterns, geometric shapes, and symbolic colors. Traditionally woven, kente designs are full of meaning. For instance, gold means wealth, green for growth and black for strength. These days people kente cloth for celebrations, special events and to honor African heritage.

Materials You’ll Need
- White cardstock (for painting the kente patterns)
- Red, green, yellow, and black paint
- Paintbrushes or sponges
- Ruler (to help make straight lines)
- Red, green, and yellow construction paper (for the background)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
How to Make a Painted Kente Cloth Craft
- Start off my showing your child examples of kente cloth online.
- Take your white cardstock and use black, green, red and yellow paint to create colored lines. Use straight lines or zigzags or short patterns to create the base. Once complete set it aside to dry fully.

- Next, paint black lines on red, yellow and red construction paper. Again paint vertical lines on one, horizontal lines on another and zigzags on another or dots, triangles, and shapes. Set it aside to dry.

Once its dry, cut it lengthwise into thin strips about 1 inch thick.

- Once your base is dry, fold it in half. On the back of the measure out your weave. For younger crafter make your weave sections larger about 1 inch. For older crafters you can make your section slightly smaller.

Draw lines starting from the fold to 1 inch from the end of the sheet. Do not cut all the way to the end. After drawing the lines, take scissors and cut along the lines.

After drawing the lines, take scissors and cut along the lines.

- Now its time to weave. Starting off with one color, start to weave this through the sections in an over under patterns.

Younger kids grade 1 and kindergarten aged children will need some guidance with this. Show them several times till the get the hang of it. You can even let them use a pencil to hold open the sections they need to weave.

- After each color is weaved through be sure to push it gently down to the bottom. Continue alternating colors until the entire cloth is complete.

- Glue the ends of the weaved strips at the ends so they don’t slip out.
