Zany Zebra Craft: Transforming a White Paper Bag into a Striped Sensation

Step 1: Gather Your Craft Materials

Before we dive into the crafting fun, let’s gather the materials needed for our zebra masterpiece:

  • White paper bag (lunch-size or small gift bag)
  • Paper Plate
  • Black acrylic or tempera paint
  • A small sponge
  • Paintbrushes
  • Googly eyes or black markers
  • Black, white and pink construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Step 2: Prepare the Zebra’s Stripes

Once we have all our craft materials ready, it’s time to transform the plain white paper bag into a zebra canvas. Pour out some black paint on to a paper plate. Cut the sponge into a thin strip. Dip the sponge into the black paint and gently dab it on the bag to create the zebra’s distinctive stripes. Encourage kids to get creative with the stripe patterns, making each zebra unique and special. Cut out two ears from white construction paper. Add a stripe or two using the sponge on the ears. Allow the paint to dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Adding the Zebra’s Details

Now that our zebra has its stripes, let’s add some finishing touches. From black construction paper cut out a large oval. Glue googly eyes onto the paper bag to give our zebra. From pink construction paper. If you don’t have googly eyes, you can use a black marker to draw the eyes instead. For the nose and mouth glue on the oval. Use a white crayon or piece of chalk to draw the nose and mouth. From pink construction paper glue inner ears. Glue them to the ears.

Step 4: Mane

For an extra touch of flair, kids can cut a strip of black construction paper to create the zebra’s mane. Make cuts along the strip to create hair. Glue these strip onto the back and top of the paper bag, respectively, to complete the zebra’s look.

Step 5: Zany Zebra Fun!

Our zany zebra craft is now complete, and it’s time to bring these magnificent creatures to life through imaginative play. Encourage kids to use their paper bag zebras as puppets or props in creative storytelling sessions. They can also display their zebras proudly in their rooms or gift them to friends and family.

Crafting our very own zany zebras using a white paper bag, black paint, and a sponge has been a delightful adventure into the world of creativity. This simple and engaging craft allows kids to express their artistic flair while learning about these enchanting animals. So, let’s celebrate our crafty success and bask in the joy of bringing these whimsical zebras to life. Happy crafting, and let your imagination run wild with our zany zebra craft!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
