Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to get crafty and spread love with homemade gifts and decorations. This year, add a personal touch to your Valentine’s Day ensemble or gift list with a charming Pipe Cleaner Heart Ring. It’s a simple, fun, and adorable craft that’s great for both kids and adults looking to express their affection in a creative way. Making your own heart-shaped rings can be a delightful activity for a Valentine’s party, a thoughtful handmade gift for friends and family, or a cute accessory to wear on the day of love. The beauty of this craft lies in its simplicity and the joy of creating something from the heart.

Activity Overview

  • Age Suitability: This craft is good for toddlers aged children 3 years old and up with adult assistance.
  • Mess Level: The mess level for this craft is low.
  • Difficulty to Create: Medium.

Materials Needed

  • Purple, pink, and red pipe cleaners

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Create the Ring Base: Start by taking one pipe cleaner and wrapping one end around your finger to form a circle. This will be the base of your ring, so adjust it to fit snugly but comfortably around your finger. Twist the end around the base to secure it.
  1. Form the Heart: Take the long end of the pipe cleaner that’s extending from the ring base. Begin to curl this end into a tight spiral, working your way towards the ring base. This spiral will form the top part of your heart.
  1. Shape the Heart: Once you have a small spiral, it’s time to shape it into a heart. Pinch the bottom of the spiral to form the point of the heart. Then, use your finger to gently press down in the center of the spiral, creating the iconic heart shape.
  2. Final Adjustments: After shaping the heart, bend it upwards so it sits atop the ring base like a gemstone. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the heart shape is just right.
  3. Wear or Gift: Your Pipe Cleaner Heart Ring is now ready to be worn or gifted! Make as many as you like in different colors to match your Valentine’s Day outfit or to give to friends.

Tips for Success

  • For a more vibrant look, try twisting two different colored pipe cleaners together before forming the ring and heart or adding pony beads.
  • If the ring feels too loose or tight, simply unwrap the base and adjust the size before re-securing it.
  • Experiment with different sizes of hearts for a varied collection of rings.

Skills Learned

  • Fine Motor Skills: Manipulating the pipe cleaners to form rings and hearts helps improve dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Creativity: Choosing colors and designing unique heart shapes encourages creative thinking and artistic expression.
  • Problem-Solving: Adjusting the size of the ring and the shape of the heart to get just the right look involves critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Pipe Cleaner Heart Ring is a delightful craft that combines the joy of making with the spirit of Valentine’s Day. It’s a wonderful way to engage in a hands-on activity that results in a cute and wearable piece of art. Whether you’re crafting with loved ones or making a batch of these heart rings on your own, you’re sure to have a fun and fulfilling experience that adds an extra touch of love to your Valentine’s celebrations.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
