Handmade Christmas cards are always a hit, and this Paper Fan Pop-Up Christmas Tree Card craft is a festive favorite in my house. My kids loved how simple folds could turn into a beautiful 3D tree, and they enjoyed adding their own decorations to make each card unique. Watching the tree “pop up” when the card opened was like a little holiday surprise every time.

This craft is a perfect mix of easy steps and eye-catching results. The 3D pop-up tree adds a wow factor, while the decorating allows for personal touches. It’s fun, festive, and a wonderful way to send a handmade holiday greeting that shows thought and care.

Why You’ll Love This Christmas Card Craft

You’ll love this craft because it combines creativity, fine motor skills, and a touch of holiday magic. The process is simple enough for kids to do (with a bit of help), and the end result is a card that looks impressive and heartfelt. Whether you’re crafting with kids or making it yourself, this pop-up card is sure to bring holiday cheer to anyone who receives it.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Green construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Double-sided tape
  • Sparkly foam paper (for the star)
  • White paint (for snow details)
  • Q-tip
  • Gold Posca marker

How to Make the Paper Fan Pop-Up Christmas Tree Card

1. Create the Paper Fans

Fold a sheet of green construction paper lengthwise in half, then fold it in half again, and repeat until you can’t fold anymore. Unfold the paper and refold it like a fan along the crease lines as well as in-between them.

Measure and cut the fan to create progressively smaller pieces. Start with the largest piece (about 3 inches long or the length of you pointer finger), then cut the next piece ½ inch shorter, and so on, until you have at least six pieces.

2. Prepare the Card Base

Fold a piece of cardstock in half to create the card base. Set it aside while you prepare the tree pieces.

3. Assemble the Tree

Start with the largest fan piece. Apply double-sided tape to the ends of the fan. Position the fan at the bottom center of the card. Tape one side of the fan to the card, then close the card to secure the other side. Repeat this process with the next smallest fan piece, placing it slightly above the first, until all the pieces are taped in place and form a tree shape.

4. Add the Decorations

Cut a piece of square paper from brown construction paper. Fold in the sides and add double sided tape. Secure this to the bottom of the tree for the trunk.

Cut a star from sparkly foam paper and glue it to the top of the tree. Cut small squares from construction paper to make presents and glue them around the base of the tree. Use the gold Posca marker to draw bows on the presents for extra detail.

5. Add Snow Details

Dip a Q-tip into white paint and dab small dots around the card to create a snowy background. Let it dry completely before writing a message inside.

This Paper Fan Pop-Up Christmas Tree Card craft is a fun and festive way to send holiday greetings. It’s easy to make, looks amazing, and will bring a smile to anyone who opens it. Get creative and make your cards as unique as the season itself!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
