February is Black History Month, and what better way to celebrate than by diving into a craft that pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of Africa? Salt painted African masks are not just a fun art project; they’re a vibrant exploration of tradition and history. These masks, which have played a significant role in African ceremonies and festivals for centuries, can now inspire creativity in your own home. Tips for Success:

  • If you’re using printer paper for your Salt Painted African Mask, adhere it to a piece of thick cardstock or watercolor paper with glue to make sure your artwork stays intact.
  • Remember, the key here is to gently touch the salt with the paintbrush and let the paint absorb naturally. Avoid using traditional painting strokes to prevent the salt from brushing off.
  • While I usually start painting without waiting for the glue and salt to dry, you might find it easier to let it dry first if you’re running into any issues. However, it’s not necessary to wait if you’re careful with your brush.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
