A simple and calming sensory craft made with treasures from your backyard

There’s something about toddlers and preschoolers—they can turn the tiniest rock or crumpled leaf into a prized possession. So why not give them a way to save those special finds in a fun, creative, and totally toddler-friendly way? DIY nature bottles are an easy, low-prep activity that blends nature play, sensory learning, and creativity all in one magical little bottle.

We’ve made these in the backyard, on camping trips, and even during rainy-day walks when the only thing we collected was soggy leaves and petals. No matter what season or what the weather’s like, your child will love making (and shaking) their very own nature-filled bottle.

Why You’ll Love These Nature Bottles

  • Simple setup, big payoff – A quick activity with no fancy materials required.
  • Supports sensory exploration – Listen to the sound of rocks, see leaves float, or shake and watch items move.
  • Promotes observation – Kids get curious about the textures, shapes, and colors around them.
  • Perfect for calming play – Great for quiet time, car rides, or winding down at the end of the day.
  • Totally customizable – Make one for every season, theme, or backyard adventure.

Materials

  • Clear plastic bottles or containers with secure lids (small water bottles work great)
  • Natural items your child collects:
    • Dandelions
    • Pebbles and rocks
    • Twigs and sticks
    • Leaves, flower petals, pine needles
    • Bits of bark, seeds, grass, feathers
  • Optional: small amount of water or baby oil, glitter, colored beads or sequins for mixed textures

How to Set Up

1. Go on a nature walk or backyard hunt
Hand your toddler a small bucket or bag and head outdoors. Encourage them to collect anything that looks interesting—flat leaves, crunchy petals, tiny stones. Talk about what they’re picking up: What color is it? What does it feel like?

2. Prep your bottle
Give your bottle a quick rinse and remove any labels so kids can clearly see what’s inside. Wide-mouthed bottles are easier for toddlers to fill.

3. Add your items
Let your child drop in their nature finds one by one. Talk about each item as they add it. Want to turn this into a color or shape hunt? Go for it.

4. Add sensory flair (optional)
For an extra sensory twist, add water to the bottle (not all the way—leave space at the top). You can also add glitter or sequins to make it sparkle, or a few drops of food coloring if you’d like a tint.

5. Seal it up
Screw the lid on tight—if you’re using water or baby oil, consider sealing it with hot glue or strong tape to avoid leaks.

6. Shake, observe, explore
Your child can now shake, roll, and turn their nature bottle. It becomes a mini treasure jar they made all on their own.

These nature bottles are just as calming as they are creative. And the best part? They give your little one a chance to slow down and see the little things—like a crinkly leaf or a speckled pebble. It’s the kind of everyday magic we love most.

Looking for a way to store seasonal treasures? Make one for spring flowers, summer sand, fall leaves, and winter twigs. You’ll end up with a sensory collection of the whole year!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
