Looking for a fun and easy Dr. Seuss craft for kids? This Sponge Painted Cat in the Hat Craft is the perfect way to celebrate The Cat in the Hat while encouraging creativity and fine motor skills. Instead of using a paintbrush, kids will use a sponge to create bold red and white stripes, giving the iconic hat a fun, textured look. It’s messy in the best way possible—just like the mischievous Cat himself would approve of!

This craft is perfect for Read Across America Day, Dr. Seuss’s birthday, or just a fun afternoon of book-inspired crafting. Plus, it’s great for all ages—preschoolers, kindergarteners, and even older kids will love it. Let’s jump in and get painting!

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • It’s simple and fun perfect for toddlers! No fancy supplies needed—just paint, a sponge, and paper.
  • Encourages creativity while reinforcing color recognition and pattern-making.
  • Pairs perfectly with storytime! Read The Cat in the Hat before or after crafting.
  • Fine motor skill practice—sponging paint helps little hands build control and coordination.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Blue construction paper or cardstock
  • Red and white paint
  • Sponge (cut into small rectangles)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • pencil

How to Make a Sponge Painted Cat in the Hat Hat

Step 1: Create the Hat Outline

Start by drawing the outline of a cat in the hat shape on the blue construction paper. This will be the base of the hat.

Step 2: Prepare the Paint and Sponge

Pour red and white paint onto separate plates. Cut a sponge into thin rectangles—these will be used to stamp the stripes onto the hat.

Step 3: Sponge Paint the Stripes

Dip the sponge into the white paint and stamp horizontal stripes across the hat, just like in the book. Next paint the red strip. Continue until you have painted at least three red stripes on the hat creating a alternating white and red pattern

Let kids go wild with stamping! The imperfect sponge texture adds to the fun and makes each craft unique.

Step 4: Let it Dry

Once all the stripes are painted, let the craft dry completely. This is a great time to read The Cat in the Hat while you wait!

Tips for Success

  • If you don’t have a sponge, you can use a crumpled-up paper towel or cotton balls to create the same effect.
  • Want to make it more interactive? Have kids act out scenes from the book with their finished hats!

This Sponge Painted Cat in the Hat Craft is an easy and exciting way to bring Dr. Seuss’s classic story to life. Whether you’re celebrating Dr. Seuss Day, working on a book-themed unit, or just looking for a creative way to spend an afternoon, this craft is a guaranteed hit.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
