Apple season is one of the best times of the year— with these apple sensory activities, you can stretch that orchard magic way beyond the picking trip.
If you’ve been around here for a while, you already know apple season is big in our house. Every September, we head to the local orchard for our annual apple-picking trip. We come home with way too many apples (like, baskets overflowing), and then I’m left figuring out what to do with them all—besides making pie.
And that’s when the idea hits me: eat them of course! But all those apples goodness always inspire so many fun sensory play ideas!
Sensory activities are a perfect way for toddlers, preschoolers, and even big kids to explore textures, scents, colors, and fine motor skills. And let’s be honest, apples aren’t just for eating—they’re the perfect prop for hands-on learning. Whether you use real apples, pretend apples, or apple-themed materials, the possibilities are endless.
These apple sensory activities are simple, inexpensive, and easy to set up at home. They can be done indoors or outdoors, and most use things you already have in your kitchen or craft stash. Plus, they’re a great way to sneak in early math, science, and literacy skills while your kids think they’re “just playing.”

10 Easy Apple Sensory Activities for Kids

1. Apple Washing Station
If your kids love water play, this one’s going to be a huge hit. Fill a large plastic bin or dishpan with water. Toss in some real apples (or plastic ones if you prefer) and give your kids sponges, scrub brushes, or even old toothbrushes.
Materials:
- Large bin or dishpan
- Warm water
- Apples (real or pretend)
- Sponges and scrub brushes
How to set it up: Fill the bin with water, drop in the apples, and invite your kids to “wash” them clean. You can add tongs or scoops for extra fine motor practice. For toddlers, keep the water shallow; for older kids, add a “rinse” bin to make it feel like a real apple-washing station.
2. Apple Bubble Foam Sensory Bin
Bubble foam is always a crowd-pleaser in our house. This version smells like apples and is full of fluffy, colorful fun.
Materials:
- 2 cups water
- 2 tbsp dish soap
- 1 tsp apple-scented extract (optional)
- Red or green food coloring
- Electric mixer
- Sensory bin or large container

How to set it up: In a mixing bowl, combine water, dish soap, and food coloring. Whip with an electric mixer until the foam forms stiff peaks. Transfer the foam into your sensory bin and add apple scoops, small cups, or plastic apples for play. For a twist, layer red and green foam for a “mixed apple” effect.
