Get creative this spring with our Cork Painted Hyacinth Craft, a fun way to bring the beauty of spring into your home, no green thumb required! Using just a few simple materials, this craft transforms ordinary corks into tools for making stunning floral artwork. It’s perfect for toddlers and preschoolers!

Material List:

  • Cork
  • Purple paint (or any color)
  • White cardstock
  • Green construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Paper plate (for the paint)

How to Make Corked Painted Hyacinth

  1. Create the Stem: Cut green construction paper into strips for the stem. Glue it onto the cardstock. Cut leaf shapes out of the green construction paper and glue them on either side of the stem.
  1. Prep Your Paint: Pour some purple paint onto a paper plate. This will be your hyacinth’s vibrant petals.
  2. Stamp the Petals: Dip the end of the cork into the purple paint, ensuring it’s evenly coated. Then, press the cork onto the white cardstock to create the hyacinth’s blooms. Start mid way between the bottom of the stem to the top and work your way up, creating a dense cluster of dots that gradually spreads out to mimic the natural shape of a hyacinth flower.

Tips for Success:

  • Variety in Color: Mix a little white paint with your purple to create different shades for your hyacinths, adding depth to your flowers.
  • Stamping Technique: Encourage gentle stamping to avoid smudging the paint and to achieve clearer petal shapes.
  • Leaf Placement: Experiment with placing the leaves at different angles and positions for a more natural look.

Skills Learned:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Dipping and stamping with the cork helps improve hand-eye coordination and precision.
  • Creativity: This craft encourages artistic expression through color mixing and design.
  • Understanding Nature: Discussing the parts of a flower and their functions can turn this craft into an educational experience about plant biology.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
