This Dad, You Rock! Card checks all the boxes — it’s simple enough for kids to make, full of charm, and delivers a cute pun that’ll definitely earn a dad-joke-approved smile.
This is one of those crafts where your child gets to explore paint, nature, and a whole lot of imagination — and the end result? A one-of-a-kind card that says, “I love you and you rock!”
Why You’ll Love This Father’s Day Craft
- It’s a card and a keepsake all in one. This isn’t a toss-it-in-a-drawer kind of card — it’s the kind dads put on their desk or shelf.
- It uses real rocks. Kids LOVE gathering materials outside, and using rocks makes this project extra special and sensory.
- So easy to personalize. You can change the colors, decorations, or message to match your kid’s creative vibe.
- Perfect for a range of ages. Toddlers can help with painting and gluing, while older kids can draw the faces, write the message, and design a background.
Materials You’ll Need
- White cardstock (any color will do, but white makes the colors pop)
- Washable paint (we used green!)
- Paintbrush
- Two similar-sized rocks (one big, one small)
- Hot glue gun (with adult supervision)
- Googly eyes – one big set and one small set
- Black paint marker
- White paint marker (optional, for fun details or highlights)

How to Make a “Dad, You Rock!” Card
- Fold Your Cardstock: Start by folding a piece of cardstock in half to create your card base. Make sure it’s sturdy enough to support the weight of the rocks — thicker paper like cardstock is best.
- Paint the Front: Use washable paint to paint the front of the card, but leave a border all the way around for a framed look. We went with a bright green, but any color your child loves will work. Let the paint dry completely before moving on.

- Go Rock Hunting!: Head outside and find two similar-shaped rocks: one slightly larger (for the “dad” rock) and one smaller (for the “kid” rock). They don’t need to be perfect — just big enough to glue on and small enough to fit on your card. Smooth, flat rocks work best.
- Glue the Rocks to the Card: Once your card is dry and you’ve picked your rocks, it’s time to glue! Using a glue gun (adults only for this part), glue the larger rock and smaller rock side by side on the bottom half of the front of the card. Let the glue set for a few minutes before moving on. Leave space between rocks to draw arms and hands.

- Add Googly Eyes: Next, grab your googly eyes and glue them onto the rocks. The larger rock gets the big eyes, and the smaller rock gets the small eyes — instant personality!

- Draw Faces, Hands & Feet: Now for the fun part — bring your rock duo to life! Use a black paint marker to draw smiles, arms, hands, and feet on the rocks. Make the arms reach toward each other so it looks like the big and small rocks are holding hands. Want to get extra silly? Add eyebrows, blush, or speech bubbles with fun phrases like “#1 Dad” or “Rockin’ Fatherhood.”

- Add the Message: At the top of the card, use your paint marker (or a bold pen) to write: “DAD, YOU ROCK!” Big bubble letters or fun block print really make it pop! If you’re using a white paint marker on a dark painted background, it’ll really stand out. On the inside of the card, let your child write their own message, draw a picture, or sign their name — anything to make it personal.

- Decorate It: Encourage your child to decorate the background. Add grass, stars, a sun, hearts, or even a mountain scene to keep that nature theme going. You can also use stickers, stamps, or more paint to give it a totally custom look.
Tips & Tricks
- Use mini craft rocks if you’re short on time or prefer a mess-free version.
- Create a whole rock family! Got more than one child? Add extra rocks to the card to make it a group celebration.
- Make it a wall-hanger. Instead of a card, you can glue your painted cardstock to a piece of cardboard or canvas board to turn it into wall art.
