Looking for a Father’s Day card idea that’s equal parts cute, colorful, and totally keepsake-worthy? This Handprint Ice Cream Father’s Day Card is a fun and easy way to show dad how special he is on Father’s Day.

This easy craft turns your child’s handprints into scoops of ice cream stacked high on a cone, with sparkly glitter glue and a pom pom cherry to finish it off. Whether you’re crafting with toddlers, preschoolers, or big kids, this project is sweet and simple!

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • It’s personal and handmade. Kids love seeing their handprints turn into something special, and dads love receiving anything made with those little hands.
  • Easy setup, big impact. You don’t need a ton of materials or time to make this card come together — and it looks adorable every time.
  • Builds fine motor skills. All the tracing, cutting, gluing, and decorating? Yep, it’s developmentally rich and playfully educational.
  • A fun way to say “I love you.” With the message “You’re the Coolest Dad!”, this craft is as sweet as the treat it looks like.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Construction paper (assorted colors for handprints + background)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Brown marker
  • Black marker
  • Glitter glue (any colors your kids love)
  • Pom pom (red for the “cherry”)
  • Pencil (for tracing handprints)

How to Make a Handprint Ice Cream Father’s Day Card

  1. Fold Your Base Card: Choose a sheet of construction paper in any color — this will be the base of your card. Fold it in half to create a card that opens up. Set it aside while you build your ice cream cone pieces.
  2. Cut and Design the Cone: Now it’s time to make your cone! Cut a triangle from a piece of brown or tan construction paper. Using a brown marker, trace the outline of the triangle to give it definition. Then, draw a waffle cone lattice — diagonal criss-cross lines going both directions — just like a real ice cream cone! Glue the cone at the bottom center of the front panel.
  1. Trace and Cut Out Handprints: Pick 2–3 different colors of construction paper to act as your “ice cream scoops.” Trace your child’s hand on each color using a pencil. Carefully cut them out — older kids can do this themselves, but little ones might need help with the scissors. Tip: You can use classic “ice cream” colors (pink, brown, white), or let kids get wild with rainbow, sprinkle, or glitter scoops!
  2. Assemble Your Ice Cream: Go back to your folded card base. Then glue your handprints upside down (fingers pointing downward) on top of the cone, one on top of the other, to look like scoops of ice cream stacked high. You can do two scoops or go big with three if you’ve got extra space!
  1. Add Sparkle with Glitter Glue: Use glitter glue to decorate the ice cream scoops. Add sprinkles, swirls, or drizzle patterns. This part is always a favorite — and it really makes the craft pop! Let kids get creative with it, and don’t worry about perfection.
  2. Top It with a Cherry: Glue a red pom pom right on top of the final scoop to complete the look with a fun “cherry” on top. It’s the cutest little finishing touch and adds a fun texture to the card!
  1. Write the Message: Use a black marker to write “You’re the Coolest Dad!” on the front of the card. Inside, let kids draw a picture, sign their name, or dictate a short message you can help them write.

Crafting Tips

  • Make it a keepsake. Write the date and your child’s age on the back so it becomes a little time capsule of those tiny hands.
  • Pair it with a real treat. This card goes great with an ice cream coupon or a trip to dad’s favorite frozen spot!
  • Craft for other family members. Want to spread the love? Make extras for grandpa, an uncle, or a bonus dad too.

This Handprint Ice Cream Father’s Day Card is as fun to make as it is to give. It’s full of color, creativity, and that magical ingredient every parent treasures — a handmade touch from the ones they love most.

Whether your kids go full glitter explosion or keep it simple and sweet, the final card will be packed with personality and love.

So grab your glue stick, your scissors, and a rainbow of paper — and let’s make dad the coolest card he’s ever seen!

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
