My kids love LEGO and they love a good science experiment, so I knew this LEGO volcano activity was going to be a hit. It’s one of those “how-is-this-so-cool” kinds of projects that combines creativity, fine motor play, and explosive kitchen science—all in one go. Bonus: It’s easy to set up with things you probably already have at home.
We did this recently as part of our at home LEGO summer mom camp, and it was a huge success. I just had one kids at home this week and I was looking forward to doing some one on one LEGO activities with him. I planned out a few ideas (like the LEGO Birdhouse) that he totally loved.
Just don’t forget the dish soap like I did the first time. (Trust me, it makes all the difference when it comes to those super satisfying foamy eruptions!)
Why You’ll Love This LEGO Volcano
- Combines imaginative play with hands-on science.
- Easy to build with LEGO or DUPLO (whatever you have!).
- Fun for a wide range of ages—from preschoolers to big kids.
- Encourages creativity, problem-solving, and a little healthy mess.
- It’s reusable—reset and erupt again!
You’ll get those amazing “Whoa!” reactions, plus the fun of building and experimenting as many times as your kids want.

Materials You’ll Need
- LEGO or LEGO DUPLO bricks
- A LEGO or DUPLO base plate (optional but helpful)
- A small container (like a medicine cup or mini condiment cup)
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Dish soap (yes! this helps create that long-lasting foam)
- Food coloring (optional but fun for lava effect)
- Spoon or dropper
How to Make a LEGO Volcano
1. Build Your Volcano
Start by grabbing a baseplate and your favorite bricks. You’re going to build a volcano around a small plastic container that will hold your baking soda and vinegar mixture.
Stack the LEGO bricks up around the container, leaving the top open. Make sure it’s stable and that you can easily remove the container if needed. Add slopes or towers if you want a more “mountain-y” look—your kids can totally design this part their way.
Tip: If using DUPLO for toddlers, the setup is even easier, and the bricks are perfect for little hands.
Wee made our volcano in the shape of a pyramid by creating steps with the basic two across blocks. If your child has another idea to create their volcano let them build it! There is no wrong way to create this step!

2. Mix Up the “Lava”
Here’s where the magic happens. Inside the container, add:
- 2 spoonfuls of baking soda
- A squirt of dish soap (this is what makes it foamy!)
- A few drops of food coloring
- Mix it all up a bit with a spoon or craft stick
3. Let It Erupt!
Now it’s showtime. Pour in a little vinegar and step back!
You’ll get a fun, foamy eruption that bubbles over the top of your LEGO volcano and spills down the sides like real lava. The dish soap is the secret ingredient here—it slows down the reaction just enough to give you more bubbly action. Without it, the fizz happens super fast and is over in a flash.
Keep adding vinegar until your reaction is exhausted. Want to go again? Just rinse the container and repeat!

Tips for Even More Fun
- Set up your volcano in a baking tray or outside for easier cleanup.
- Try changing the color of your lava for each round.
- Let your kids experiment with the amount of baking soda vs. vinegar for bigger or smaller eruptions.
This LEGO volcano is the perfect mix of science, sensory fun, and construction play. It’s quick to set up, thrilling to watch, and something your kids will ask to do over and over again. Whether you’ve got a preschooler just starting with DUPLO or an older builder who loves a challenge, this activity is a guaranteed win.

So grab some bricks, a little baking soda, and don’t forget the dish soap. It’s time for some erupting, foaming, science-filled fun!
