Does your child love building with LEGO bricks as much as mine? Of course they do, what child doesn’t love LEGO! Well ditch the instructions and try this LEGO Birdhouse activity for a fun at home summer activity! It’s part nature craft, part STEM challenge, and something you can pull together even while camping!

We first tried this on one of our at-home summer camp days. No special kits or fancy pieces are required—just regular LEGO or LEGO DUPLO blocks, a little creativity, and some birdseed.

Why You’ll Love Building a LEGO Birdhouse

  • Combines outdoor play with LEGO building fun.
  • No glue or cutting required—just snap bricks together!
  • Kids get to learn about birds and nature while practicing fine motor skills.
  • Works for all ages—little ones can use DUPLO while older kids get creative with regular LEGO.
  • You can build and rebuild as many times as you like!

Materials You’ll Need

  • LEGO or LEGO DUPLO bricks
  • A small bowl or cup (optional, for birdseed)
  • Birdseed
  • String

How to Build Your LEGO Birdhouse

No two LEGO birdhouses look exactly the same, but here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get started:

1. Build a Sturdy Base

Start with a flat LEGO baseplate or snap together a few larger pieces to create a solid floor. Make sure it’s wide enough to hold a small pile of birdseed. You don’t want your base to be too large as that will only take up more sloped pieces to build the roof.

2. Add Side Walls

Snap together four pillars at the corners of the baseplate, leaving four open “door” openings where birds can get in and out.

3. Create a Roof

For the roof, build a flat LEGO layer or use angled bricks if you have them. A sloped roof helps rain roll off instead of collecting inside the birdhouse. We found that building the roof off the base first helpful at preventing it from collapsing. This was the most challenging part finding enough sloped pieces to put the roof together but once we did it really looked amazing! It was totally worth the effort and took up most of the morning in play!

Add a perch on each side of the birdhouse for birds to land on. Then finally decorate the birdhouse with any LEGO greenery that you may have!

4. Fill with Birdseed

Place a little birdseed inside your LEGO birdhouse. If you want extra structure, you can place a small container or bowl inside your build and pour birdseed into that.

5. Optional: Hang It Up

If you want to hang your LEGO birdhouse from a branch or a hook, build small side handles using bricks with holes or tie string around two sides to create a loop.

Tips for Success

  • Build on a flat surface to keep everything stable.
  • Choose larger LEGO pieces for younger kids so they’re easier to snap together.
  • Keep an eye on wind—this isn’t a permanent birdhouse, more of a temporary feeder or nature observation project.

The LEGO Birdhouse is such an easy, creative way to combine nature play with building time. Whether you’re setting it up at home or bringing it along as a quiet camping activity, it’s a great hands-on project that helps kids notice birds, think about structure and design, and enjoy a little outdoor STEM learning.

Let me know if your family gives this one a try—I’d love to see how your birdhouses turn out!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
