There’s something magical about crafting at the campsite—especially when the supplies come straight from the forest floor. We’ve made plenty of fun projects while camping, but this Nature Mandala craft just hits differently. It’s calm, it’s creative, and it makes you slow down and really notice the beauty around you. Plus, it requires zero prep and zero packing. Just step outside your tent, take a walk, and start gathering!

Whether you’re at a forested site like Haliburton Forest Reserve (one of our all-time favorite spots) or enjoying a cozy campground closer to home, this craft works anywhere. It’s one of those quiet activities that invites everyone to sit, create, and relax together—kids, grownups, even the dog if they’re chill enough.

Why You’ll Love This Nature Mandala

  • It’s mess-free and requires no tools or glue.
  • Encourages mindfulness, observation, and fine motor skills.
  • It’s a gorgeous, open-ended art activity that kids of all ages (and grown-ups) will enjoy.
  • You can do it anywhere: campsite, trail, park, or even your own backyard.

Materials

All you need for this activity is nature! Here are some of our favorite things to gather:

  • Small rocks
  • Pinecones
  • Bark pieces
  • Acorns
  • Dandelions
  • Feathers
  • Maple seeds (those helicopter ones!)
  • Pine needles
  • Leaves (all sizes and colors)
  • Twigs
  • Wildflowers
  • Moss
  • Ferns
  • Berries (be sure they’re safe—don’t eat them!)
  • Seed pods

Bring a small basket, paper bag, or just use your pockets to collect your materials on a walk around your campsite or hiking trail.

How to Set Up and Create a Nature Mandala

Step 1: Find your space
Look for a flat, clear surface. It could be a picnic table, a large rock, or a patch of dirt near your tent. This will be your natural canvas.

Step 2: Sort your treasures
Lay out your collected items and take a look at what you have. You can group them by type, color, or texture—this helps little ones visualize what they’ll be working with.

Step 3: Start from the center
Choose one item (a pinecone, a rock, or a flower) to be the center of your mandala. Then begin building out in circular layers. Try to repeat patterns and balance the design by adding matching items opposite one another.

Step 4: Keep going
Work your way outward, adding more layers as you go. There’s no right or wrong—just follow the shape, the colors, and what feels fun.

Step 5: Admire (and maybe photograph) your creation
Nature mandalas are temporary by design, so take a moment to admire your beautiful work—and definitely snap a photo before the wind, a squirrel, or little feet undo it all!

Tips for Success

  • If you’re doing this with little kids, try a circle outline in the dirt to help them build evenly.
  • Encourage everyone to gather items responsibly—don’t take living plants unless it’s safe and allowed.
  • Use this as a quiet morning activity before breakfast or a relaxing wind-down before bedtime.

Crafting a Nature Mandala while camping connects creativity with the outdoors in the best possible way. It’s simple, meaningful, and totally screen-free. And it gives kids a chance to see nature not just as a place to play, but as a beautiful source of inspiration.

So next time you’re out under the trees, slow things down, grab a handful of nature, and make some mandala magic.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
