Sometimes the simplest craft ideas turn into the most fun, and that’s exactly what happened with this Penguin on an Iceberg Craft. My kids enjoyed creating their own little penguins and designing the colorful background. Watching their painted iceberg come to life and imagining their penguin braving the snowstorm was a bonus! It’s the perfect combination of painting, cutting, and assembling—lots of hands-on fun.

What’s even better is that this craft is as creative as it is customizable. Kids can pick their own colors for the background, decide how big or small their iceberg will be, and even make up stories about their penguin. It’s a little bit of art, a little bit of storytelling, and a whole lot of fun.

Why You’ll Love This Penguin Craft

First, it’s super easy to set up with materials you probably already have at home. The mix of painting, cutting, and gluing makes it a great all-in-one activity to keep kids engaged. Plus, the creative freedom to design their iceberg and background means no two penguins will look the same—every child’s craft becomes uniquely theirs.

Second, it’s more than just a craft—it’s a chance to practice fine motor skills, explore color mixing, and learn about penguins and their icy habitats. You can sneak in some fun facts about penguins while working on this craft, turning it into a mini art and science lesson.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • White cardstock (x2)
  • Black marker
  • Black, white, and orange construction paper
  • Glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Watercolors
  • White paint
  • Q-tip
  • Scissors

How to Make the Penguin on an Iceberg Craft

  1. Create the Iceberg

On one piece of white cardstock, use a black marker to draw the outline of an iceberg. Paint the iceberg with blue watercolors, allowing the shades to blend for an icy effect. Let it dry completely, then cut it out.

  1. Design the Background

On the second piece of cardstock, let your child choose three colors for the background. Use watercolors to paint lines, zigzags, or random patterns across the paper. Allow the background to dry completely.

  1. Add Snowflakes

Dip a Q-tip into white paint and dot it around the page to create falling snowflakes. Let the paint dry before displaying the finished craft.

  1. Assemble the Penguin

Cut out a penguin body and wings from black construction paper. Use white construction paper for the belly and eyes, and orange for the beak and feet. Glue the pieces together to assemble the penguin.

  1. Put It All Together

Once the background is dry, glue the iceberg in the center of the page. Attach the penguin to the iceberg, creating the main scene.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
