INSIDE: Pretend to munch and count with this Potato Chip Craft for Kids inspired by George Crum. It’s a great way to learn about Crum for Black History Month. This fun craft would also make a great addition to any Food unit for toddlers and preschoolers!

Who Was George Crum?
George Crum was a chef who invented the potato chip. While working in a restaurant as a chef in 1853, a customer sent back a plate of French fries complaining that they were too thick and bland. Crum made a new batch but instead he cut them super thin and covered them with salt. The picky customer loved them and they quickly became very popular in the restaurant.
Crum would later go on open up his own restaurant and continue to perfect his potato chip recipe!

Potato Chip Craft for Kids
Grab a paper bag and paint the front blue. Set it aside to dry.

Grab some cream coloured construction paper and cut out 15 imperfect ovals for the chips.

Fold each ovals like an accordion.

Cut out a large yellow circle from construction paper and a irregular rectangle out of the red construction paper. Glue it to the yellow circle. Write the words Potato Chip on the red construction paper. Cut off any excess red construction paper.

Glue your potato chip logo to the blue painted potato chip paper bag. Add your potato chips! Pretend to enjoy them like George Crum’s customers!

Count the Potato Chips
Add a learning element to the craft by pulling out a dice and letting your little one roll and then count that number of potato chips into the bag.

Use in Pretend Play
Use the potato chip craft in a pretend play activity such as a restaurant or grocery store.
