Sand Ramps: Easy & Fun Beach STEM Activity for Kids

Heading to the beach this summer and looking for an easy, low-prep, super fun activity for kids of all ages? Then you must try Sand Ramps. We made these during our recent beach day at Sandbanks Provincial Park, and they were a total hit with my kids. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how long this would keep them entertained, but once they started building ramps, tunnels, and “car stunts,” they were locked in for over an hour. And I got to read my book in peace—huge win.

Not going to the beach but still want to try this idea? Find a sandbox in your neighbor and start building!!

There’s something about the open-endedness of playing with sand and the thrill of watching balls fly down a ramp that makes this activity so engaging. It mixes sensory play, creativity, and just enough science to count as a STEM win too.

Why You’ll Love Making Sand Ramps

  • You don’t need to bring anything extra—just cars or balls from your beach bag.
  • It’s the kind of activity that grows with your kids: simple hills for toddlers, epic courses and jumps for older kids.
  • It’s a great way to sneak in a little STEM learning (hello gravity and force!) without anyone noticing.
  • It’s open-ended, meaning kids can play, redesign, and challenge themselves over and over again.

Bonus? There’s no mess to clean up—just smooth out the sand when you’re done.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Damp sand (check—already at the beach!)
  • Toy cars or small balls (we brought a few Hot Wheels and bouncy balls)
  • Optional: buckets or shovels for shaping sand, but totally not necessary

How to Make Sand Ramps at the Beach

1. Find the Right Sand

You’ll want sand that’s slightly damp—not too dry or it won’t hold its shape, and not so wet that it turns to sludge. Near the shoreline or under an umbrella where it’s packed works great.

2. Build Your Ramp Base

Use your hands (or a shovel if you brought one) to pile up sand into a mound. My kids actually used their bodies to help build the ramps initially. Sitting with their legs out stretched to either side, they started to pile the sand in front on them as high as they could. They packed it down so that it formed a solid base and then moved back. We then shaped the mound into a sloped ramp—steep or gentle, depending on how wild they wanted the ride. They smoothed it out with their hands so the ball didn’t get stuck halfway.

3. Create a Launch Spot

Next, flatten out the top of the ramp so there’s space to place a car or ball before sending it down. If your kids want more of a challenge, they can build up the launch area to make it taller and faster.

4. Add Tunnels, Walls, and Turns

After a few trials with the ramp my kids got a little creative with their setups. They added little side walls to keep the ball on track, carve out tunnels underneath, and build turns and “jumps” at the bottom. One of my kids made a double ramp system with a bucket of water at the end that he tried to get the ball to jump into—it was amazing.

5. Test and Tweak

Now comes the fun part—testing! Place a car or ball at the top and let it roll. If it doesn’t go all the way down, try adjusting the slope or smoothing out bumps. If it flies off the side, build up the walls. It’s trial-and-error in the best, most giggle-filled way.

STEM Learning Sneak Peek of Sand Ramps

While kids are building and testing, they’re actually learning about:

  • Gravity (what makes the car roll)
  • Friction (why smoother ramps go faster)
  • Force and momentum (why steeper ramps launch cars farther)

And if you’re lucky, you might even get them asking questions like, “Why did this one go farther?” or “What if I made it taller?” That’s when you know you’ve hit gold.

Science Behind Sand Ramps

Sand ramps are a fun and simple way to explore physics and engineering concepts—right at the beach! When kids build a ramp out of damp sand and roll a ball or car down it, they’re learning about gravity, incline, and motion.

The steeper the ramp, the faster the object moves, thanks to the pull of gravity. Kids can also see how friction plays a role—smooth, packed sand makes for a faster ride, while soft, bumpy sand slows things down. It’s a hands-on way to explore how forces work, and a great way to turn play into an outdoor science lesson!

Sand ramps are now officially on our must-do beach activities list. They’re easy, fun, educational, and totally kid-powered. Next time you’re packing for the beach, just toss in a couple of cars and let the kids take care of the entertainment.

Trust me—they’ll be building and racing in the sand long after the tide comes in.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
