Penguins are such a fun winter theme, and this shapes penguin craft is a great way to combine creativity with learning. My kids had a blast using simple shapes to build their penguins, and they loved adding their own colorful touches with watercolors. It’s one of those crafts that keeps kids engaged while sneaking in a little education—they don’t even realize they’re learning about shapes while having so much fun!
This craft is fun, easy to set up, and has so many learning opportunities. Kids will practice cutting, gluing, and assembling shapes while creating their own unique penguins. It’s a great way to mix art, motor skills, and a little geometry into a single activity.
Why You’ll Love This Shapes Penguin Craft
What I love most about this craft is how versatile it is. Younger kids can focus on recognizing and cutting out shapes, while older kids can get creative with painting and assembling. Plus, the finished penguins are adorable and make for great winter decorations or fridge art.

Materials You’ll Need:
- Watercolor paper
- Watercolors
- Black, orange, and white construction paper
- Glue
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Q-tip
- White paint
- Paper plate for paint
How to Make the Shapes Penguin Craft
1. Paint the Background
- Start by painting a colorful winter sky on the watercolor paper using watercolors. Let your kids choose their favorite colors and blend them to create a vibrant background. Set aside to dry.

2. Cut Out the Penguin Shapes
Depending on the age of your child you can draw the following shapes and invite them to cut them out (5 years +). Otherwise you can cut of the following shapes and your child can glue them together.
- From the black construction paper, draw and cut out a medium circle for the penguin’s head and a large semi circle for a wing.
- Use the white construction paper to draw and cut out a very large semi circle for the penguin’s belly and a small circle for the eye.
- Draw and cut a small triangle from the orange paper for the beak and two smaller semi circles for the feet.

3. Assemble the Penguin
- Glue the white belly onto the page. Then glue black wing oval. Then attach the black circle for the head.
- Add the orange beak and feet, placing them in the right spots.

4. Add the Details
- Use the black marker to draw eyes or cut out small circles from white and black paper to create layered eyes. Add any extra details your kids want, like a bow tie or a scarf!
5. Attach the Penguin to the Background
- Once the painted background is dry, use a Q-Tip and white paint to add snowflakes in the background.

This shapes penguin craft is an easy, educational, and fun way to spend a winter afternoon. It encourages creativity, sharpens fine motor skills, and lets kids explore the concept of shapes in a hands-on way. Plus, the finished penguins are just too cute not to display!
