Straw Painted Fireworks for Kids

Creating straw painted fireworks is a fantastic opportunity for children to explore different painting techniques and experiment with color mixing. This activity stimulates their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and encourages imaginative thinking. Not only will they enjoy the process of creating beautiful artwork, but they will also learn about the dynamic patterns and bursts that make fireworks so captivating.

Materials Needed:

Black paper or cardstock
Assorted colored paints (acrylic or tempera)
Drinking straws
Rubber bands
Disposable plates or paint palettes
Optional: Glitter

How to Make Straw Painted Fireworks

To create straw painted fireworks, you first need to make your fireworks ‘brush’. To do this gather 5–7 straws together. Place an elastic or rubber band 1/3 of the way from one end of the straws. Place another one 1/3 away from the other end. Take one end and start to fold each straw down and back to create a star shape.

Next, squirt small amounts of paint onto a palette or disposable plate. Dip the end of a drinking straw with the star in the paint. Make sure it is completely covered. Then start to make prints on a sheet of black construction paper.

You can make different straw stars for each colour of the firework or you can use the same straw star. Simply continue stamping until most of the paint is gone. Its a good idea to have several sheet of black construction paper for your little one to stamp. Stamp with one colour at a time and start to layers the colours over each other.

Before the paintings have dried, they can add a touch of sparkle with glitter for that extra festive flair.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
