Looking for a quick, sweet, and totally frame-worthy Father’s Day card idea? This Tape Resist Father’s Day Card is exactly what you need — no fancy materials, no perfection required, just a whole lot of love (and a little painty mess!) to celebrate dad.
This easy craft lets kids get creative while making a one-of-a-kind card that’s sure to bring a smile. It’s bright, bold, and full of that sweet handmade touch that dads (and grandpas, uncles, and bonus dads!) always appreciate.
Why You’ll Love This Craft
- Super simple to set up. No crazy craft store run needed — you’ve probably got everything at home already.
- Perfect for little hands. Toddlers, preschoolers, and even big kids will love getting their fingers messy with paint.
- A keepsake to treasure. The negative space “DAD” design is eye-catching and makes for a really special card that’s fridge-worthy.
- A chance to chat. As kids paint, you can talk about what makes dad awesome and why he’s their hero!

Materials You’ll Need
- Card stock (any color works — white makes the colors pop!)
- Washi tape or painter’s tape
- Washable kids paint (pick dad’s favorite colors!)
- Paper plate or paint palette for easy cleanup
How to Make a Tape Resist Father’s Day Card
- Fold Your Card: Start by folding your piece of card stock in half to create a card. You can do a top-fold or side-fold — whatever you like best!

- Tape on the “DAD”: Cut pieces of washi tape or painter’s tape to spell out DAD in big, block letters right on the front of the card.
Press the tape down firmly so the edges are sealed — this helps keep the paint from sneaking underneath.

- Time to Paint: Pour a little washable paint onto a paper plate or palette. Let kids dip their fingers in and dab, swirl, or press paint all around and over the taped letters. Encourage them to use different colors for a rainbow effect or stick to dad’s favorite color combo. There’s no right or wrong — just let them cover the whole area with painty goodness! If you’re worried about the colors mixing and turning brown, keep the colors your use close to each other on the rainbow. That way if they do mix they will make a bright beautiful color!

- The Big Reveal: Once the paint is dry (or mostly dry — no shame in being a little impatient!), gently peel off the tape.
Underneath, you’ll see crisp white letters spelling out DAD — a sweet and simple negative space surprise!

Tips and Tricks
- If you want to add a little sparkle, sprinkle some glitter over the wet paint before it dries.
- Let older kids use a brush or sponge for more control — or keep it all about the finger-painting for little ones!
- Make a matching envelope with leftover tape and paint to complete the set.
This Tape Resist Father’s Day Card is one of those crafts that’s so simple but so sweet. It’s all about the process, the mess, and that final moment when the tape comes off to reveal something special.
So grab your tape and paint — and get ready to make a Father’s Day card that’s as awesome as dad is!
