Play is at the core of learning during the early years and it can take many forms. One of the most important of these is sensory play because it engages all of a child’s senses (taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing) and has a enoumous positive impact on brain development.

Our Sensory Play Kits are a fun and easy way to keep your child engaged while at the same time capitalizing on the benefits of sensory play to nurture their mind!

How to Make Watercolor & Salt Apple Painting

Grab a sheet of watercolor paper. You can either do this activity using a white crayon or with colourful oil pastels. Grab 4 bowls and add a drop of red, green, yellow and brown food colouring inside each respectively. Mix them with some water. You can also use watercolors for this activity.

White Crayon & Salt Apple Painting

If using a white crayon, draw three apples on the paper is different sizes, including the stem and a leaf.

Grab your coloured water and brush and start to paint the apples. They won’t be able to see the apples at first but they will magically appear when they start to paint the page. Paint the apples, red, green and yellow. Paint the stems and leafs brown and green.

While the paint is still wet, sprinkle a little salt over the coloured water. You want the paint to still be wet so that the salt can absorb the water. The salt acts like a sponge and sucks up a small amount of the water and colour leaving a cool pattern behind. Experiment with different amounts of salt of each apple. The more salt you add the more they absorb but the less effect you will have but it will still create pretty cool texture on your apple.

Allow your painting to dry. Once dry gently tip your picture over to shake off any salt that didn’t stick. It should stay on your page unless you added a lot of salt.

Oil Pastel & Salt Apple Painting

If using a colourful oil pastels, draw three apples, one red, one green and one yellow on the page including the leaf and stem in brown and green.

For the oil pastel they can paint the apples red, yellow and green or whatever they like.

While the paint is still wet, sprinkle a little salt over the coloured water. You want the paint to still be wet so that the salt can absorb the water.
