Choosing toys for a 1-year-old can seem like a big task, but here’s a tip: sometimes, it’s the simplest things that bring the most joy. In fact, you might find your little one having just as much fun with a cardboard box as they do with the latest toy! At this age, kids are exploring their world with curiosity, so the best toys are open-ended ones that encourage them to use their imagination and try new things. Think about toys that grow with them, allowing them to discover something new with each playtime.

What’s great about toys for one-year-olds is that they don’t need to be complicated. The best ones let kids explore in their own way, whether that’s stacking, rolling, filling, or emptying. They’re all about learning through play, building motor skills, and giving toddlers the freedom to invent their own games. So, let’s look at some fun, open-ended toys that are simple, creative, and guaranteed to keep those little hands busy!

Each toy encourages curiosity and imagination, while being durable enough to handle enthusiastic little hands. Plus, they’re perfect for letting toddlers grow, discover, and play at their own pace!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
