Cotton Ball painted penguins are one of my go-to winter crafts. The dabbing motion is perfect for preschoolers and toddlers, and the finished penguins come out adorable every single time—round belly, speckly texture, and all.

This craft is also an easy win for classrooms: minimal prep, simple steps, and it sneaks in fine motor practice while kids think they’re just making a cute winter animal.

Materials

  • White cardstock or blue construction paper
  • White paint
  • 2–4 cotton balls (medium size)
  • Clothespins (to hold the pom poms like a stamp)
  • Orange, black and white construction paper (beak + feet) or orange marker
  • School glue
  • Scissors
  • Optional: glitter, snowflake sequins, cotton balls, scarf cutouts

Cotton Ball Painted Penguin Craft Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep your penguin shape. Cut a penguin shape. I like to do a long oval shape with a flat bottom. It creates super cute penguins and they are easy for kids to cut out. You can trace one out quickly on black construction paper and let your preschooler cut it out. Glue it to your blue construction paper background.
  2. Make your “cotton ball paint tool.” Clip a cotton ball into a clothespin. This gives kids a clean grip and keeps fingers mostly paint-free.
  3. Cotton ball paint the penguin body. Dip the cotton ball into white paint, then dab around the outside of the penguin body.

  1. Let it dry. This is a great time to read a penguin book or do a quick penguin “waddle break.”
  2. Add the face. Cut out two orange feet, and triangle beak from orange construction paper, Cut two medium circles from white paper and two small circles from black consturciotn paper. Glue them to the penguin bottom leaving plenty of room for the white belly. Glue on googly eyes (or draw eyes) and add a small orange triangle beak and orange feet at the bottom of the body.
  3. Finish with winter extras. Add a glitter snowy background. On a paper plate pour out some glue and add silver glitter. Use another cotton ball and clothespin to dab it all around the penguin.

Simple variations: Use blue paper for an instant icy background, stamp snowflakes with a q-tip, or turn the penguin into a puppet by taping it to a craft stick.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
