You’ll love this craft because it brings a classy yet fun Halloween look to your home, and it’s easy to adapt to your style. The glowing lights under the sheets give these ghosts an ethereal, floating appearance that looks amazing both day and night. Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or just decorating your porch, these lit ghosts are sure to be a hit. Plus, it’s a craft that can be reused year after year—just take them apart and store them until the next spooky season!

What You’ll Need

  • Tomato cages (in various sizes)
  • Zip ties or duct tape (to secure the free ends of the tomato cages)
  • Large and small styrofoam balls (for the ghost heads)
  • Fairy lights
  • Drop cloth or white sheet
  • Black foam (for ghost faces)
  • White duct tape or glue or glue gun
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Assemble the tomato cage base:

Start by flipping the tomato cage upside down so that the wide end is at the bottom. Use zip ties or duct tape to secure the loose ends at the top together, forming a point. This will serve as the body of your ghost.

2. Add the ghost’s head:

Place a large styrofoam ball on top of the secured end of the tomato cage to act as the ghost’s head. Push it down on the exposed ends of the tomato cage to secure the styrofoam ball and to make sure it’s firmly attached.

3. Light up the ghost:

Wrap fairy lights around the tomato cage, starting from the bottom and working your way up to the top. Make sure the lights are evenly distributed so the ghost glows from all angles.

4. Drape the ghost:

Drape a white sheet or drop cloth over the entire structure, making sure it covers the ghost from head to base. Let the fabric hang loosely to create a flowing, ghost-like effect.

5. Create the face:

Cut out eyes and a mouth from black foam to create the ghost’s face. Use tape or glue to attach these pieces to the front of the sheet where the ghost’s head is.

6. Secure the sheet:

If necessary, use white tape to secure the sheet in place around the base of the tomato cage, making sure the ghost’s “body” stays intact. You can also add some small, fun details like trimming the edges of the sheet for a more ragged, spooky look. You can also add a witch’s hat and broomstick!

7. Display your ghost:

Your ghost is now ready to light up the night! Place it in your yard, on the porch, or even inside by a window for a fun and glowing Halloween decoration.

This simple craft gives you a high-end Halloween look without the high price tag. The glowing, floating effect of these lit ghosts will make your home feel festive and spooky, perfect for welcoming trick-or-treaters or guests.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
