One of my favorite projects is creating leaf animal crafts, where kids can use their imaginations to turn simple leaves and twigs into fun animal shapes.
Whether it’s a deer made from rich brown leaves, a bird with bright red and yellow feathers, or a fox with an orange tail, there’s no limit to what your child can create. It’s the perfect mix of outdoor exploration and indoor creativity—what could be better?
These crafts not only encourages kids to use their creativity, but it’s also a great way to build fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Picking up and arranging the leaves, gluing them in place, and adding little details all help strengthen the muscles in their hands, preparing them for writing and other tasks. Plus, it’s a wonderful opportunity to talk about different types of leaves, textures, and colors—all while making adorable animals.

Why You’ll Love These Leaf Animal Crafts
You’ll love these leaf animal crafts because they are so simple to set up and uses materials you already have around you. After a fun nature walk collecting leaves, your child can let their imagination run wild by turning those leaves into unique animals.
It’s a low-cost, creative activity that helps kids connect with nature while developing important fine motor skills. Plus, it’s fun to see what kind of creatures they come up with!
What You’ll Need to Make Leaf Animal Crafts
- A variety of leaves (different shapes, colors, and sizes)
- Twigs, acorns, seeds
- Glue stick
- Double sided tape (optional)
- Scissors (optional)
- Googly eyes or small stones or white and black paper (for eyes)
- Paper or cardstock (for the background)
How to Set Up
- Gather your materials: Start by going on a nature walk with your child to collect a variety of leaves in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Pick up a few twigs and small items like acorns or seeds, which can be useful for details like eyes or tails.
- Prepare the leaves: Some leaves may already be the perfect shape, but for finer details, like the animal’s head, body, or wings, you may need to cut the leaves into circles, ovals, or other shapes. For example, cut a large leaf into an oval for the body or smaller ones into circles for eyes. You can also use googly eyes, paper eyes, or even small seeds for the animal’s eyes.

- Deciding what animals to make: Deciding what animals to make is half the fun of this leaf craft! Encourage your child to think about the different shapes they see in the leaves and how they might resemble parts of an animal. A long, narrow leaf could be a bird’s tail, while a large, round leaf might be perfect for a lion’s face. If they love a certain animal, like a fox or a bird, guide them in choosing leaves that match the animal’s color and shape. They can get creative and make animals that are real, like the deer or bird in the photo, or they can invent their own creatures entirely from their imagination! Let them explore how to use twigs for legs, feathers for wings, and cut leaves for any detail they want. The process is all about experimenting and having fun with nature’s shapes and colors.
- Assemble the animals: Lay out your leaves and twigs on a sheet of paper or cardstock. Once you’re happy with the arrangement, either use double-sided tape or glue to attach the leaves and twigs in place. Double-sided tape is great for a mess-free option, but glue might be better for heavier materials like twigs. You can also add small details like feathers, tails, and legs using twigs or additional leaves.
