Looking for a spring craft that’s simple, beautiful, and just a little bit satisfying? This Q-Tip Painted Allium Flower craft is an easy win for toddlers, preschoolers, and big kids who love dipping, dotting, and creating something colorful. If you’ve seen those big purple firework-looking flowers blooming in gardens or on Pinterest, you’ve seen alliums—and now your kids can make their own version with just paint and a Q-tip!

This is one of those activities that feels fancy but uses supplies you already have. It’s also a total crowd-pleaser—no special skills required, just some dots and imagination.

Why You’ll Love This Q-Tip Allium Flower Craft

  • Perfect for little hands – Q-tips are just the right size for small fingers learning to grip and paint with control.
  • Low mess, big impact – It looks impressive, but clean-up is a breeze.
  • Teaches color mixing and shape recognition – Great for learning while playing.
  • Fun for all ages – Even grown-ups might want to try one of their own!

Materials You’ll Need

  • Q-tips
  • Elastic band
  • Washable paint (purples, pinks, and even blues look great)
  • White cardstock or thick paper
  • Green paint
  • Paint brush
  • Paper plate or paint tray
  • Optional: gold paint or glitter glue for a little sparkle

How to Set Up the Q-Tip Painted Allium Craft

Step 1: Get your supplies ready

Lay out your paper, paints, and Q-tips. Pour a little bit of purple and green paint onto a paper plate or tray. You might want to tape down the painting paper if your toddler tends to chase the paper around the table.

Step 2: Make your stem and leaves

First paint your stem and stalk using the green paint on the cardstock. Paint a several stalk coming out from the stem for the flower dots to go on.

Step 3: Start dotting!

Take a bunch of Q-tips and wrap an elastic band around them tightly. Dip the end of a Q-tip into one of your paint colors and begin dotting in a circular shape above the stem. You can go tight and dense in the center and then scatter more dots around the edges to make it look like a fluffy flower head.

Step 4: Let it dry

Set your allium artwork aside to dry completely. Once it’s dry, you can go in and add glitter glue or a little gold paint in the center for extra sparkle (totally optional but totally cute).

Tips and Variations

  • Make a whole bouquet by painting multiple stems and flower heads on one big piece of paper.
  • Want to sneak in some fine motor work? Use a clothespin to hold the Q-tip for a little grip strength practice.
  • Use cotton balls instead of Q-tips for a fuzzier look.

This Q-Tip Allium Flower craft is one of those easy spring activities that doubles as pretty wall art and a chance to talk about flowers, seasons, and color. Whether you’re looking for a weekend project, a preschool classroom activity, or something to do while you sip your coffee, this one’s a keeper.

Dot away, friends!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
