Let the sunlight stream through a kaleidoscope of colors with this simple yet stunning Flower Suncatcher Craft. It’s a super fun craft that combines the beauty of flowers with the art of suncatching, making your windows a canvas for light-infused art. Perfect for preschoolers and kids for a colorful craft filled afternoon this spring!

Material List:

Flower Suncatcher Craft Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Print and Prepare the Template: Start by printing out your flower template. Be sure to cut larger than the template. Then, use it as a guide to cut out the flower outline from black construction paper. For suncatcher you need an outline of the flower in the black construction. Or you can draw your own flower outline on a folded piece of black construction paper and cut it out.
  1. Set Up the Contact Paper: Unroll a sheet of contact paper and use masking tape to secure it, sticky side up, to your work surface. This prevents it from curling and makes it easier to work with.

  1. Add Colorful Tissue Paper: Cut tissue paper into small squares. Randomly place these squares inside the flower outline on the contact paper, overlapping them slightly for a stained glass effect.
  1. Seal the Suncatcher: Cut another piece of contact paper and carefully place it sticky side down over your flower, sealing the tissue paper in between. Smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles.

  1. Trim and Display: Use scissors to cut around the flower, leaving a small border. Finally, use double-sided tape to stick your flower suncatcher onto a window that gets plenty of sunlight.

How My Kids Played with This Craft:

My kids, aged 5, 5, and 8, loved mixing and matching the colors of tissue paper, each creating their own unique flower suncatcher. They were thrilled to see their artwork catch the light once displayed on the window, transforming our living room into a vibrant gallery of their own making.

Tips for Success:

  • Keep Contact Paper in Place: Use masking tape to secure the contact paper to your working surface to prevent it from moving around.
  • Overlap for Best Effect: Encourage kids to overlap the tissue paper pieces slightly for a more colorful and cohesive stained-glass look.
  • Smooth It Out: After placing the second sheet of contact paper, use a flat object like a credit card to smooth out any air bubbles.

Skills Learned:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Cutting tissue paper and contact paper hones precision and coordination.
  • Creativity and Color Theory: Choosing and arranging tissue paper colors fosters artistic expression and an understanding of how colors blend.
  • Patience and Concentration: Assembling the suncatcher requires focus, especially when working with sticky materials.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
