If you’ve been following our at-home summer camp series, you know we like to keep things low-key and simple—especially on those slower days where we’re hanging at home between bigger adventures like swimming or mini road trips.
Today, we decided to slow things down with a fun nature-inspired art activity: Leaf Rubbing!
It’s one of those classic crafts that doesn’t require a huge setup or fancy supplies, but it still feels super satisfying for kids of all ages. Plus, if you’ve got a backyard or a park nearby, it doubles as a mini nature hunt first.
Why You’ll Love Leaf Rubbing
- Nature meets art: Combines outdoor exploring with creative time.
- No paint mess! Crayons only—so it’s easy to clean up and even works on a picnic table.
- Works for all ages: Toddlers can scribble and still see cool patterns; older kids can focus on detailed rubbings.
- Encourages mindfulness: This is one of those quiet, focus-heavy activities perfect for winding down after a busy summer morning.

Materials You’ll Need
- White printer paper
- Construction paper (optional, for framing)
- Crayons (peeled so the sides can be used)
- Assorted leaves in different shapes and sizes
- Cling wrap (to help hold things in place if it’s breezy)
How to Set Up Leaf Rubbings
We set this up right at our kitchen table as it was crazy hot outside, but it would also work great on the porch, in a garage, or even inside on a rainy day.
1. Go on a Leaf Hunt
Head outside with your kids and collect a handful of leaves. Look for ones with clear veins and different shapes—maple, oak, clover leaves, whatever you can find! Pro tip: flatter, non-crinkly leaves work best.
2. Set Up Your Art Station
Lay out white printer paper, peeled crayons (TIP: check out this post for an easy way to peel crayons!!), and the leaves you collected. Place a piece of cling wrap over the leaf and tape down the sides. This helps keep everything from blowing away while the kids rub.

3. Position Your Leaf
Put a leaf vein-side-up (this creates the best texture) under a sheet of printer paper. You can do one big leaf at a time or arrange a few smaller ones in a collage-style setup.
4. Start Rubbing!
Use the side of a crayon—not the tip—to gently rub across the paper. As your kids rub, the shape and texture of the leaf will magically appear! Encourage them to experiment with different colors, layering crayons for a rainbow effect.

5. Frame It or Make Cards
Once the entire page is covered in colorful leaf rubbings you can either start a new one or glue it to a sheet of construction paper for a stunning display!

Why Leaf Rubbing Is More Than Just an Art Project
Leaf rubbing isn’t just about creating pretty prints—it’s also a sneaky nature lesson! While rubbing, kids notice all the tiny veins and edges of leaves. This is a great moment to chat about:
- Why leaves have veins
- How plants use leaves to collect sunlight and make food
- The different shapes and textures found in nature
Plus, the quiet, repetitive motion of rubbing crayons over paper is surprisingly calming. It’s a great sensory activity for kids who need a little wind-down time after more active play.
We love how Leaf Rubbing fits perfectly into our home summer camp rotation: no mess, no stress, and lots of room for creativity.
So next time you need an easy afternoon craft that doesn’t involve paint splatters, grab some crayons and take a nature walk. Your backyard probably has everything you need for this one already!
Let me know if you try it, and tag us if you make leaf rubbing cards or wall art—always fun seeing your spin on it!
