If your kids are itching for a spring craft that’s super simple but looks extra cute, this Q-tip Painted Cherry Blossom Craft is where it’s at. We’re talking zero fancy materials—just paper, paint, and a few cotton swabs nor q-tips (yep, the ones from your bathroom!). It’s the kind of low-prep project that turns into a big win.

Cherry blossoms are one of those things that feel like magic. They show up, paint the trees pink, and suddenly it’s spring. This craft lets your little one bring that soft, colorful magic to life in their own way—with lots of dots, creativity, and freedom to make it their own. Whether you’re crafting at the kitchen table, setting up for a classroom art center, or just need a quiet moment of focused play, this activity checks all the boxes.

Why You’ll Love This Q-Tip Painted Cherry Blossom Craft

  • Zero stress setup. You probably have everything you need already.
  • Perfect for little hands. Q-tip painting is ideal for practicing grip and control.
  • Process art meets pretty display. Kids get to experiment, and you get something adorable to hang up.
  • Fun for all ages. Toddlers, preschoolers, and older kids can all make it work at their level.

Materials

  • Tree template (see below) or Brown marker or paint (for tree branches)
  • White cardstock or construction paper
  • Pink paint (you can also add white or red to mix shades)
  • Q-tips
  • Paper plate or paint tray
  • Elastic band

How to Set It Up

1. Draw your tree branches.
Start by scrolling down and printing out one of my free tree templates on white or blue paper. Or you can draw simple branches across your paper using a brown marker or paint. Let them curve naturally—there’s no wrong way to draw a tree!

2. Prep your paint.
Pour a little pink paint onto a plate or tray. If you want a layered look, add a second or third shade—light pink, dark pink, even a little white.

3. Grab your Q-tip “paintbrushes.”
You can use a single Q-tip for a soft blossom look or bundle 3–5 together with a rubber band or clip for a clustered flower effect. It’s a fun option for experimenting with texture and stamping styles.

4. Start dotting!
Let your child dip the Q-tip into the paint and start dotting around the branches. They can add as many or as few blossoms as they like. Encourage them to try overlapping dots or using different shades to build up the flowers.

5. Let it dry and display!
Once they’re happy with their blossoms, set the paper aside to dry. These make great spring decorations or even DIY greeting cards.

This Q-tip blossom craft is one of those activities that feels like a sweet spot between open-ended play and a pretty finished product. It’s relaxing, mess-friendly, and gives little artists space to explore color and repetition. Plus, there’s just something super satisfying about those dot-dot-dot patterns appearing on the paper.

So grab a few cotton swabs and let your kids stamp their way into spring!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
