Rainbow Sun Catcher Craft for toddlers and preschoolers

This is your lucky day because we have a really fun Rainbow Sun Catcher Project for Kids just in time for upcoming St. Patrick’s Day! We got inspired to create these after creating something similar for Valentine Day!

Instructions Rainbow Sun Catcher Craft

  1. Fold your paper plate in half and cut out a rainbow shape. See the picture below for a guide.
  2. Cut out a square from the contact paper. The square should be large enough to cover the entire shamrock on the paper plate.
  3. Peel the back off the contact paper and stick it the the underside of the paper plate with the sticky side facing up.
  4. Have your child pour coloured rice on the sticky paper to create the rainbow either starting with red or purple. Make sure that they pour enough to cover all the sticky paper.
  5. Once you have completed the rainbow, press the rice down firmly onto the contact paper with your hand. This will help the rice stick to the contact paper.
  6. Shake off the remaining rice back into your bowl.
  7. Use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of the paper plate.
  8. Tie a piece of ribbon through the hole and hang up your paper plate rice rainbow sun catcher!

How to Make Coloured Rice

What You’ll Need

  • 1 Cup of White Rice
  • 1/2 tsp White Vinegar
  • Several Drops of Gel Food Coloring
  • Large Ziploc Bags
  • Parchment Paper
  • Baking Sheets or Tupperware containers

How to Make

  1. Combine the rice, white vinegar and food coloring in a Ziploc bag.
  2. Seal it carefully and mix the contents throughly.
  3. Repeat for each color.
  4. Lay a sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet or line a Tupperware container.
  5. Spread the colored rice out on the parchment paper and allow it to dry overnight.

Troubleshooting

If you don’t have gel food coloring, regular food coloring will work fine. If you want your rice to be more vibrant add more than just a few drops of food coloring and a small amount of white vinegar.
