2. What is Chromatography?
Crafting with coffee filters is not only a great art project, it is also a great way to explored the concept of chromatography.
What is chromatography? Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in a solution through a medium in which the parts of the mixture move at different speeds.
In this case the mixture is the washable marker or dot marker ink that you use on the coffee filter. The solution is the water that you sprayed on the coffee filter. The medium is the actually coffee filter itself. The different parts of the mixture are the various colours that make the marker.
My kids were pretty amazed to learn that markers aren’t made up of just one colour. In fact they mix several different colours together to get the exact shade of colour you see on the marker.
