Using a coffee filter to make crafts is one of our favourite things to do! There are so inexpensive and accessible and you can turn them into just about another you desire! They are also great for exploring chromatography with kids, in easy and fun STEAM art activity!

Coffee filter art is a creative and simple art activity that involves using coffee filters as a canvas to create unique and colorful designs. The process involves coloring or painting on the coffee filter and then using water to blend the colors and create beautiful patterns. This activity is easy to set up, requires minimal supplies, and is suitable for kids of all ages.

One of the great benefits of coffee filter art is that it is a fun and engaging way to promote creativity and self-expression in children. It allows kids to experiment with color mixing and blending, encourages them to use their imagination to create unique designs, and provides a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when the finished product is displayed. Additionally, coffee filter art can be a great way to teach kids about science concepts such as chromatography and capillary action, which are involved in the color blending process.

Ways to Colour Coffee Filters

There are many many different ways you can colour coffee filters. As you go through these projects and if they list a material or supply that you don’t have, remember that you can still do the craft with coffee filters using a different supply to colour the filters. Here is a list of all the ways you can colour coffee filters:

Coffee Filter STEAM Crafts

Crafting with coffee filters is not only a great art project, it is also a great way to explored the concept of chromatography.

What is Chromatography?

What is chromatography? Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in a solution through a medium in which the parts of the mixture move at different speeds.

In this case the mixture is the washable marker or dot marker ink that you use on the coffee filter. The solution is the water that you sprayed on the coffee filter. The medium is the actually coffee filter itself. The different parts of the mixture are the various colours that make the marker.

My kids were pretty amazed to learn that markers aren’t made up of just one colour. In fact they mix several different colours together to get the exact shade of colour you see on the marker.

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to finally share my new crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched July 1 at on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
