How to Make DIY Sponge Bombs

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

To create your own sponge bombs, you’ll need a few basic supplies. Start by gathering several colorful sponges. Choose sponges that are soft and absorbent, as they will hold the water well. You’ll also need a handful of rubber bands to secure the sponges together. With just these two items, you’re well on your way to creating the ultimate summer water play accessory!

Step 2: Assemble the Sponge Bombs

Using scissors, cut 3 sponges lengthwise into 3 strips each about 1 inch thick. Stack the sponge strips in three rows of three. Take a rubber band and tightly wrap it around the center of the strips. Make sure to wrap it multiple times to secure the sponge strips together. Pull the strips apart from each other to creat the sponge ball.

Repeat the above steps to make as many sponge bombs as you desire. Go outside and draw a target on the ground using sidewalk chalk. Fill a bucket with water, dip the sponge bombs in the water and throw them at targets.

Step 3: Let the Water Wars Begin!

With your sponge bombs complete, it’s time to put them to the test! Gather your family and friends in an outdoor space where water play is allowed, such as a backyard or a local park. Soak the sponge bombs in a bucket of water or under a running hose until they are fully saturated. Then, let the water wars begin! Toss the sponge bombs back and forth, aim for targets, or engage in a friendly water fight. The soft, squishy sponges are perfect for soaking up water and creating a refreshing splash on a hot summer day.

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 airs in the summer of 2023! We were also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.
