Rainy days bring a special kind of magic. The pitter-patter on the windows, the smell of fresh rain, and, of course, the inevitable puddle-jumping contest that turns into a full outfit change. While my kids love running outside with their rain boots on, sometimes we need a fun indoor activity to keep the rainy day excitement going. That’s where rain-themed crafts come in—perfect for bringing the fun of a stormy day inside while keeping little hands busy.

If your toddlers or preschoolers love splashing in puddles or watching raindrops slide down the window, they’ll love creating their own rain-inspired art. These crafts are simple, low-mess (well, mostly), and use materials you probably already have at home. Plus, they’re a great way to sneak in a little learning about weather, colors, and textures while having fun.

Why You’ll Love These Rain-Themed Crafts

  • Perfect for rainy days – Whether the weather is too gloomy to go outside or you’re looking for a fun way to extend the rain theme, these crafts keep kids entertained indoors.
  • Encourages creativity – From painted raindrops to rainbow clouds, kids can explore colors, textures, and patterns in playful ways.
  • Fine motor skill practice – Many of these activities involve cutting, gluing, or stamping, which helps strengthen little hands for writing later on.
  • Simple and fun – No complicated setups or hard-to-find materials—just easy, engaging crafts that toddlers and preschoolers will love.

Rainy Days at Our House

At our house, rainy days can go one of two ways. Some days, it’s all about getting outside and stomping in puddles until our socks are soaked. Other days, we stay inside, curl up with books, and listen to the rain while working on crafts. There’s something so cozy about creating a rain-themed project while the storm rolls outside—it’s like bringing a piece of nature inside.

One of my favorite memories was when my toddler insisted on making their own “rainstorm” by flicking water off a paintbrush onto their paper. It turned into a full-blown sensory experience, and let’s just say I learned that toddlers and paintbrushes with water are a bold combination! But honestly, that’s what makes these crafts fun—there’s no right or wrong way to create, and sometimes the process is just as exciting as the final artwork.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
