There’s just something about spring that makes kids (and grown-ups!) want to make a mess—in the best possible way. The weather is warming up, the colors outside are turning from brown to bloom, and creative energy is in the air. If you’re looking for open-ended, colorful, totally kid-led ways to get into the season, spring process art is where it’s at.
These activities are all about the doing, not the final result. Process art gives kids space to explore materials and techniques without any pressure to make something “right.” There’s no template, no expected outcome—just lots of freedom, fun, and discovery. And spring is the perfect time to bring in fresh colors, natural textures, and seasonal inspiration to spark creative play.
Why You’ll Love Spring Process Art:
- It’s low-pressure: No Pinterest-perfect craft to copy. Just set out the materials and let your child take the lead.
- Builds confidence: Kids feel proud when they create something totally their own.
- Supports development: While they’re painting, gluing, stamping, and splattering, they’re building fine motor skills, practicing focus, and learning cause and effect.
- Perfect for all ages: Toddlers, preschoolers, and even big kids can join in at their own level.
A Few Favorite Ideas to Try
We’re not listing a million ideas here, because you probably have your favorites ready to go—but here’s how we love to set the stage for process art in the spring. Continue below for all our fun ideas. But check out this list for ways to create your own spring process art project!
Create an “invitation to make”:
Grab a tray or baking sheet and fill it with supplies. Think cotton balls, dot markers, paint in spring colors, q-tips, glue, feathers, tissue paper, flower petals, scraps of cardboard, or recycled bubble wrap. The more textures and tools, the better.
Take it outside:
If the sun’s out, bring your art outdoors! Hang paper on a fence for big arm movements. Lay out canvas on the grass and use fly swatters or sponges to splatter paint. You can even paint with mud (yes, really—it’s such a hit).
Mix in nature:
Collect sticks, rocks, flowers, or leaves and let kids use them in their art. Try flower printing, leaf rubbing, or using petals to “paint” across a page.
Use the season for inspiration:
Rainbows, bugs, blossoms, eggs, sunshine… spring is packed with imagery that kids love to explore and represent. But remember—don’t force it. If your toddler paints a giant purple blob and calls it a butterfly, that’s perfect.

Bubble Wrap Rainbow Stomp Painting
Wrap bubble wrap around your child’s feet, load it up with rainbow-colored paint, and let them stomp across paper. This one is as messy and joyful as springtime should be.

Blow Painting with Straws
Drop blobs of paint on paper and hand over a straw—then watch kids giggle as they blow the paint into wild, windy shapes. Add googly eyes to turn your abstract shapes into creatures!

Nature Paint Brushes
Go on a nature walk and collect leaves, sticks, flowers, and grass to create your own set of natural paint brushes. Dip them in paint and let your child explore the beautiful marks each tool can make.
