Masking tape is one of those supplies that always surprises me. You grab a roll thinking you’ll just use it for wrapping boxes or labeling leftovers, but when it comes to kids’ crafts and play, masking tape becomes pure magic. Whether it’s plain beige tape or the bright colorful kind you can find at the dollar store or craft store, this sticky tool has endless uses for creative, fine motor, and STEM-inspired play.

In our house, we keep a basket of colorful masking tape in the craft cupboard, and it gets used almost daily. Sometimes the kids make roads for toy cars, sometimes they use it to tape paper together for giant murals, and sometimes it becomes the star of an activity all on its own. The best part? It’s low-cost, easy to clean up, and safe for preschoolers to handle on their own (with a little help tearing pieces).

Some of the activities listed below use Washi tape but it can easily be modified to use masking tape. You can grab some for your home here:

Below I’ve rounded up some fun and easy masking tape activities for kids. Each one uses simple materials you probably already have at home, and they’re designed to build skills like problem-solving, creativity, and fine motor development—all while keeping your little ones busy and entertained. Some of the activities use Washi tape, which is a super fancy Japanese tape but can easily be modified with colorful masking tape.

Why You’ll Love Masking Tape Activities

  • They use simple, inexpensive supplies.
  • They’re super versatile—great for preschoolers through elementary.
  • They support learning in math, art, and even STEM problem-solving.
  • They’re easy to set up indoors or outdoors.

Now let’s dive into these creative ideas!

Masking Tape Activities for Toddlers

1. Pom Pom Tape Spider Web

Stretch masking tape across a doorway or between two chairs in a crisscross web pattern. Give your child a handful of pom poms to toss and see if they can get them to stick to the “spider web.” It’s a fun Halloween activity but also great for fine motor skills any time of year.

2. Sticky Tape Shapes

Tape different shapes onto the floor (circles, squares, triangles) and call out one for your child to hop to. This activity doubles as a gross motor game and shape recognition practice for preschoolers.

3. Tape Christmas Tree

Create a giant Christmas tree on the wall or floor using green masking tape. Kids can decorate it with paper ornaments, pom poms, or even stickers. A simple way to add festive fun without needing a real tree.

4. Reflection Symmetry

Tape a vertical line down the middle of a table or floor. Kids place objects or drawings on one side, then use tape and more objects to copy the “reflection” on the other side. A hands-on way to explore early math and symmetry.

5. Splatter Painting

Make a cool resist painting by taping down a design on cardstock or canvas. Kids splatter or paint over it, then peel away the tape to reveal crisp lines underneath. A messy but totally rewarding art project!

6. Clothespin Pattern Match

Tape lines across a piece of cardboard and mark color patterns with tape. Give kids clothespins painted in matching colors to clip onto the line in the same sequence. This boosts both pattern recognition and fine motor strength.

7. Snowflake Balance

Create snowflake shapes on the floor with masking tape and challenge kids to balance on just one “branch” at a time. This doubles as a winter-themed gross motor game and a fun way to work on balance.

8. Painted Canvas Bag Craft

Lay tape in stripes or shapes across a plain canvas bag, then let kids paint all around it. Once dry, peel away the tape to reveal a bold, modern design. Perfect for gifts or library bags.

9. Shape Sticky Wall Puzzles

Stick masking tape outlines of shapes on contact paper or the wall. Cut matching foam or paper shapes for kids to stick inside the outlines. It’s like a homemade puzzle, and it can be changed up every time.

10. Rescue the Hearts

Perfect for Valentine’s Day! Tape foam or paper hearts to a wall or tray, then give your child tools like tongs or spoons to “rescue” them by peeling or grabbing. Builds dexterity and makes holiday play extra sweet.

11. Easter Fine Motor Activity

Make large egg shapes from tape on the floor and fill them with different taped lines or patterns. Invite kids to decorate with pom poms, stickers, or markers. A simple but festive spring activity.

12. Snowball Rescue

Tape cotton balls (“snowballs”) to a wall or table and challenge kids to rescue them with tongs, spoons, or just their fingers. Great for winter fine motor fun.

13. Turkey Dinner Rescue

Use tape to secure pretend food items (like play food or paper cutouts) onto a tray. Kids can “rescue” each item, building finger strength and coordination along the way.

14. Easter Egg Rescue

Tape plastic eggs closed and hide small objects inside. Kids peel the tape to crack them open and discover what’s inside. It adds an extra fine motor challenge to classic egg play.

15. Fall Leaf Rescue Sensory Bin

Add paper or foam leaves to a bin and tape some of them down. Kids must pull or peel the tape to free the leaves. This is an engaging sensory and fine motor activity with a seasonal twist.

Masking tape might not seem like the most exciting craft supply, but once you see what kids can do with it, you’ll always want a few rolls on hand. From art projects to holiday crafts to math games, the activities above show just how versatile and engaging this simple tool can be. Plus, colorful masking tape adds an extra layer of fun for kids who love bright and bold play materials.

So the next time you’re wondering how to keep your little one busy, grab a roll of tape and try one of these fun masking tape activities for kids—I promise it’ll stick as a new favorite in your home!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.
