Winter animal crafts have a way of pulling kids right into the season. There’s something about penguins, polar bears, and snowy owls that instantly sparks curiosity and creativity—especially when the weather outside keeps everyone indoors a little more than usual. These are the kinds of crafts that don’t need fancy supplies or perfect results. They’re playful, tactile, and full of personality, which is exactly what makes them work so well for kids.

Why You’ll Love These Winter Animal Crafts

These winter animal crafts are easy to adapt for different ages and attention spans.

  • Toddlers can explore textures and colors, preschoolers can practice fine motor skills, and older kids can add details and make creative choices.
  • Many of these projects also double as sensory play, which is especially helpful during long winter stretches when kids need hands-on experiences.
  • Another bonus: most of these crafts use basic materials you likely already have at home. That means less prep, less pressure, and more time actually creating together.

Adorable Winter Animal Crafts for Kids

1. Tissue Paper Winter Penguin Craft

This penguin craft uses torn or scrunched tissue paper to create a soft, textured winter look kids love. It’s a great way to build fine motor skills while letting kids experiment with layering and color placement.

2. Fork Painted Snowy Owl Craft

Fork painting creates feather-like textures that work perfectly for snowy owls. Kids enjoy using an unexpected tool, and the process feels more like exploration than traditional painting.

3. Paper Mosaic Igloo and Penguin Craft

This craft combines cutting or tearing paper with gluing small pieces to form an igloo and penguin scene. It’s a slower, focused activity that supports hand strength and spatial awareness.

4. Paint Splat Polar Bear Craft

Paint splatting adds energy and movement to crafting, making this polar bear project especially fun for kids who love action-based art. The end result is always unique, which keeps expectations low and creativity high.

5. Paint Splat Penguin Craft

Similar in process to the polar bear version, this penguin craft lets kids see how splattered paint can transform into a recognizable winter animal. It’s messy in a controlled way and incredibly satisfying.

6. Fork Painted Polar Bear

This fork painted polar bear craft is a fun winter animal activity that looks detailed without actually being complicated—perfect for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and totally doable with toddlers (with a little help).

7. Handprint Penguin Craft

Handprint crafts always feel personal, and this penguin version is no exception. Kids love seeing their own hands turned into art, and it makes a sweet keepsake too.

8. Paper Plate Narwhal

This activity feels playful and creative, but it’s also easy enough for an afternoon at the table when everyone needs something hands-on without a big mess.

9. Penguin on an Iceberg Penguin Craft

This craft adds a storytelling element by placing a penguin on an icy base. Kids often extend the activity into pretend play, imagining the penguin sliding, swimming, or exploring.

10. Cotton Ball Painted Polar Bear

This cotton ball polar bear craft is a cozy winter animals activity that is simple and satisfying—great for a quick afternoon craft or as part of a bigger winter animal theme.

11. Puffy Paint Penguin Craft

Puffy paint adds a sensory twist that kids can see and feel as it dries. This penguin craft is especially engaging because the paint changes texture, which keeps kids curious.

12. Snowy Owl Potato Masher Craft

This winter we were lucky enough to have a family of owls nest in one of the trees in our backyard. Although it was very difficult to see them during the day, we were able to see them flying around at night with the light from our house shining in our backyard. We did this craft the next day to remember them!

13. Shapes Penguin Craft

Using basic shapes to build a penguin helps kids connect art with early math concepts. It’s a great choice for reinforcing shape recognition while still feeling creative.

14. Cotton Ball Artic Fox Craft

Cotton balls add instant texture, so kids get that “real fur” look without needing fancy techniques. This cotton ball Arctic fox craft is also one of those crafts where the process is just as fun as the finished fox.

15. Sensory Rice Penguin Craft

This craft blends art and sensory play by using dyed rice to fill in a penguin design. Scooping and pouring the rice adds another layer of fine motor practice.

16. Toilet Paper Roll Polar Bear Craft

This toilet paper roll polar bear craft is a fun winter animals activity that works for toddlers through early elementary—simple enough to finish in one sitting, but with lots of room to add personality.

17. Torn Paper Penguin Craft

Tearing paper is simple but powerful for building hand strength, and it gives this penguin craft a playful, textured look. Kids enjoy the freedom of ripping paper instead of cutting it.

18. Glitter Snow Penguin Craft

Glitter adds just the right amount of winter sparkle to this penguin craft. It feels festive and special, making it a favorite for kids who love a little extra shine.

19. Toilet Paper Roll Snowman Craft

Use cardboard tubes to create this easy and adorable snowman craft with your toddler or preschooler this winter! It makes a great after school or after nap craft for kids.

Winter animal crafts like these make cold days feel cozier and more creative. Whether you’re filling an afternoon or planning a full winter theme, these projects invite kids to explore, create, and play—one penguin at a time.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
